North-East teams well represented in Under-21 squad

Despite an up and down season for the North-East teams they are still represented in the current Under 21 squad.

Manager Aidy Boothroyd has selected five players from North-East clubs with Middlesbrough and Sunderland having two players apiece selected and one from Newcastle United.

Despite both struggling for game time recently Boro pairing Jack Harrison (on loan from Manchester City) and Dael Fry have been selected for the upcoming fixtures with Romania and Ukraine.

Newcastle goalkeeper Freddie Woodman who was part of the victorious Under-20 World Cup squad and is currently on loan at Aberdeen has been selected.

Finally Sunderland loan pairing Jake Clark-Salter and Ovie Ejaria who are on loan from Chelsea and Liverpool respectively have also been called up after both player a part in England’s summer Under-20 triumph.

England Under-21s sit on top of their qualifying group for next year's European Championships approaching the half-way point of the campaign.

But before facing Ukraine at Bramall Lane on March 27th in a qualifier they will face Romania at Molineux on March 24th in a game which will be a tribute to former England, West Bromwich Albion and Wolves striker Cyril Regis, who passed away earlier this year.

Boothroyd has been able to call upon a squad featuring plenty of experience, as well as including new faces Ejaria and Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon.

There’s also a return to the squad for Spurs midfielder Harry Winks after he missed November’s game through injury, while striker Tammy Abraham is back in the group after featuring in the senior squad last time out.
