Sunderland's possible saviour who's still learning his trade
Sunderland manager Chris Coleman believes that he may have found the man who could be the key to success in the final third of the season, young striker Joel Asoro.
Sunderland recreated scenes of Liverpool's dramatic Champions League win in Istanbul as the Black Cats came from 3-0 down at half-time to rescue a point at Ashton Gate last Saturday, when they travelled to take on play-off chasing Bristol City.
Sunderland manager Coleman has been keen to play down the incredible comeback from his side, but he has been very open about picking out some key performances from the match.
One man who Coleman picked out was veteran midfielder Lee Cattermole but Asoro was also singled out by Coleman for his display in a memorable second-half.
Asoro has been able to keep his place in the side despite Coleman recruiting forwards Ashley Fletcher and Kazenga LuaLua in the January transfer window.
The youngsters only goal this season was in a 1-0 win over Hull City but the Swedish striker has also managed two assists this season in his 14 appearances.
Coleman has been speaking to safc.com and told the club that he was impressed with Asoro's 'fearless' attitude during the comeback at Bristol City.
“I thought Joel Asoro was absolutely excellent in the second 45 minutes,” Said Coleman.
“That (his fearlessness) is what you need and he’s got a really good attitude – he doesn’t miss training and he’s ready for games whether we play him wide or down the middle.
“I’m really pleased for him as well. When you address him in training, whether it’s tactical advice or you know, he always tries to take it board so I’m really pleased for him.
“He’s worked incredible hard and he’s worked harder since he’s got in the team to stay in the team, and that’s a pleasing sign.”
